Please Note:\u00a0 the final exam will be given during the regularly scheduled final exam period.\u00a0 Please make travel plans accordingly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CLASS<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> PARTICIPATION:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 Participation in class discussions is expected and required. Students are expected to have read the assigned material thoroughly before class in order to facilitate class discussion; students are strongly encouraged to brief the cases contained in the assigned material prior to each class. Class participation may account for up to 10% of a student&#8217;s grade for the course.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">EXAMS<\/span><\/strong>:\u00a0 There will be two midterm exams and one final exam. The exams will be essay format exams, and are open book (the required textbook only) and open note (your class notes). The midterm exams will be given during the class period, and will each account for 25% of a student&#8217;s grade for the course; the final exam will account for at least 25%.<strong> The final exam will be given during the regularly scheduled final exam period. Please make travel plans accordingly.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">WRITING ASSIGNMENTS:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 There will be a number of writing assignments, either done in-class or as take-home assignments. The main purpose of the writing assignments is to develop reasoning and analytical skills, and to improve writing skills, all of which will required on the exams (and for a successful career!). The writing assignments will account for 10% of a student&#8217;s grade for the course.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">USE OF STUDENT WRITTEN WORK:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 Copies of student written work may be used for teaching evaluation and assessment; any student work so used will be rendered anonymous through removal of identification of the originator of the work. Any students objecting to such use of their work should notify the instructor.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">ACADEMIC INTEGRITY POLICY CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENT<\/span>:\u00a0<\/strong> Syracuse University sets high standards for academic integrity. Those standards are supported and enforced by students, including those who serve as academic integrity hearing panel members and hearing officers. The presumptive sanction for a first offense is course failure, accompanied by the transcript notation \u201cViolation of the Academic Integrity Policy.\u201d The standard sanction for a first offense by graduate students is suspension or expulsion. Students should review the Office of Academic Integrity online resource \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/academicintegrity.syr.edu\/faculty-resources\">Twenty Questions and Answers About the Syracuse University Academic Integrity Policy\u201d<\/a> and confer with instructors about course-specific citation methods, permitted collaboration (if any), and rules for examinations. <a href=\"http:\/\/academicintegrity.syr.edu\/academic-integrity-policy\/\">The Policy<\/a> also governs the veracity of signatures on attendance sheets and other verification of participation in class activities. Additional guidance for students can be found in the Office of Academic Integrity resource: \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/academicintegrity.syr.edu\/what-does-academic-integrity-mean\/\">What does academic integrity mean?<\/a>\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All students who take Whitman courses to certify in writing that they have read, understand, and agree to comply with the Academic Integrity Policy. Whitman students should have completed a certification statement. All other students enrolled in this course, including Management minors, are also required to complete a certification statement available in the Undergraduate Office (Suite 215). Class attendance is expected. It is recognized that there may be occasions when students are required to be off campus for some class meetings; in those instances, students should inform me in advance whenever possible. Students who miss class are responsible for all material covered, and are responsible for making up any missed assignments. Absences due to medical conditions or because of required participation in university-sanctioned activities will be excused, upon presentation of appropriate documentation substantiating the reason for the absence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELIGIOUS HOLIDAY OBSERVANCES:<\/strong> This year the university will not observe any religious holidays by cancelling classes.\u00a0 Students are required to notify instructors by the end of the second week of classes if they will be observing any religious holidays.\u00a0 The form for notifying instructors regarding religious holidays is available on MySlice, and students must submit such notification by September 12th.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">LEARNING OBJECTIVES:<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n1.
